As part of the state visit of Vietnamese President Tô Lâm, Jacques Fayolle, Director of Mines Saint-Étienne, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. The ceremony was attended by Nguyên Duy Ngoc, Chairman of the Organization Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vu Hai Quan, Minister of Science and Technology, and Hoàng Minh Son, Minister of Education and Training.
This agreement follows 15 years of academic exchanges and the development of a laboratory on clathrate hydrates in Hanoi. It aims to strengthen scientific cooperation to provide concrete solutions for decarbonization and critical materials challenges.
Several actions are planned, including the creation of a joint master's program on critical materials, covering mining processes, refining, and recycling. A joint laboratory on decarbonization, focusing on CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technologies, will also be established.
Support for implementing research innovations, particularly through the start-up Carbon Cage incubated at Mines Saint-Étienne, is an integral part of this agreement. The next step in this collaboration is scheduled for November, with the visit of Jean-Michel Herri, a research professor at Mines Saint-Étienne's SPIN research center and co-founder of Carbon Cage, to Vietnam.
