After obtaining the Responsible Digital label, Mines Saint-Étienne signed the Responsible AI Charter in June 2026, reinforcing its commitment to Sustainable Development and Social and Environmental Responsibility (SD&SER).

This initiative follows the school's digital strategy, launched four years ago. The signing of the Responsible AI Charter, published by the Responsible Digital Institute (INR), formalizes Mines Saint-Étienne's commitment to implementing artificial intelligence systems that are human-centric, controlled, inclusive, ethical, trustworthy, robust, and eco-responsible.
To translate these principles into concrete actions, the school's responsible digital delegates have drafted a Charter for the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools for staff. This practical guide aims to support the integration of AI within the institution, promoting informed and lucid use.
In parallel, the school invites its staff to take the Responsible AI MOOC offered by the INR. This free online course, open to the public, allows for deeper knowledge of AI and its impacts. It is a prerequisite for obtaining a professional AI license for school employees, many of whom have already highlighted the relevance of the training.
The Responsible AI Charter complements the Responsible Digital Charter, signed by Mines Saint-Étienne in 2022. This dual commitment demonstrates a strong desire to address sustainable development challenges in the training of future engineers and research activities.
The school has also adopted several best practices, such as integrating the life cycle of digital tools into its specifications, publishing research work (like the BENUR project) or student projects (such as including seniors in digital initiatives), and actively participating in the « Digital Cleanup Days » annually in March.
The Responsible Digital Festival, a highlight for promoting sober and ethical technology, offers workshops, conferences, and film screenings, meeting with great public success each March.
Through its work to reduce the digital environmental footprint, Mines Saint-Étienne became in 2023 one of the first engineering schools of its level to obtain the Responsible Digital level 1 label from the INR. Renewed in 2025 after an external audit, this label attests to the school's efforts for a more regenerative, inclusive, and ethical digital environment, making it a benchmark actor in digital transition and sustainable development.
