Saint-Étienne Métropole is continuing the free distribution of individual compost bins for residents living in houses with gardens, as part of its biodéchet sorting policy.

Since January 1, 2024, Saint-Étienne Métropole has been encouraging its residents to sort their biodéchets at the source. For those living in detached houses with gardens, the prioritized solution is local composting. To this end, the metropolis offers a free compost bin for each eligible household.
The distribution campaign, initially organized from September 2023 to April 2025, was a great success. Nearly 16,000 out of 50,000 eligible households were equipped with a free individual compost bin. However, many people wishing to acquire this equipment could not submit their application within the given deadlines.
Following requests from local elected officials and users, Saint-Étienne Métropole has therefore decided to continue the distributions. Compost bin requests are now processed throughout the year by the metropolis.
Users who have not yet received their compost bin are invited to submit their request on the Saint-Étienne Métropole website, under the "Préserver - recycler" (Preserve - recycle) tab, then "Demande de composteurs" (Compost bin request).
