Wood heating, while potentially ecological, can contribute to air pollution through fine particle emissions. To address this, the Metropolis of Lyon and the territories covered by the PPA are implementing restrictive measures.
Open-fire fireplaces have been prohibited in the Metropolis of Lyon since April 1, 2023. This ban will extend to other PPA territories from April 1, 2026. Furthermore, starting April 1, 2028, wood heating appliances dating before 2002 will also be forbidden.
The installation of new appliances is now reserved for equipment labeled 'Flamme Verte' or equivalent, ensuring better energy efficiency and a significant reduction in fine particle emissions, up to ten times less than conventional appliances.
To assist households in replacing their old equipment, financial aid is available through the Fonds Air Bois. These grants can reach €3,000, subject to income conditions, and can be combined with national schemes like MaPrimeRénov’.
For more responsible use, it is recommended to use dry, quality wood, follow the appliance's operating instructions, and have the installation serviced and the chimney swept annually.
