This pioneering project, led by CDC Biodiversité in partnership with the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park and the Auvergne Conservatory of Natural Spaces, aims to restore the degraded ecosystems of these peat bogs. The site, covering 56.55 hectares and situated at an altitude of 1300 meters, is included in the Livradois-Forez PNR and the Natura 2000 site "Monts du Forez".
Historically affected by drainage ditches created in the 1960s to promote spruce plantations, the peat bogs suffer from altered functioning, leading to drying out, loss of typical species, CO2 release, and a reduction in their "natural sponge" role.
The planned restoration work includes the suppression of drainage effects, reduction of spruce plantations, and restoration of typical pastures. The objective is to re-establish hydrological functioning, combat carbon dioxide release, and diversify the surrounding forest.
The program relies on the sale of 56.55 Compensation / Restoration / Renaturation Units (UCRR), supplemented by timber sales and pasture leases. Initial work is scheduled for late 2026-early 2027, followed by peat bog restoration actions in 2027-2028. A local monitoring committee will oversee the project for 32 years.
