In March 2025, the City of Vienne launched a study to assess the feasibility of a crematorium within its territory. This initiative responds to the evolution of funeral practices, with cremation being chosen by nearly 40% of French people and this proportion expected to grow.
Facing increasing demand at nearby crematoriums, particularly in Beaurepaire, Lyon, Bron, and Marcilloles, studies conducted since 2025 have identified the Mont Salomon cemetery as a potential site for the facility.
The project, including the construction and layout modalities of the building, was presented during a public meeting open to all Viennese residents on September 23, 2026.
