For nearly two years, many young people awaiting recognition of their minority status had been living in the Chartreux garden in precarious conditions. With winter approaching, the municipality decided to act.
Although not directly its responsibility, the City of Lyon has found a temporary accommodation solution in the former Favre boarding school (4th arrondissement). This building, owned by the City and vacant since September 1st, can accommodate 130 young people. The initiative is managed by the Centre communal d’action sociale (CCAS) of Lyon.
This new center aims to provide dignified and safe living conditions for the young people while their case is reviewed by the children's judge. The CCAS has identified the young people in coordination with associations and collectives on the ground. Social, health, and legal support will be provided, along with a dedicated team and 24/7 security.
The City of Lyon also expressed concern about other urgent situations, such as the threat of eviction for nearly 300 single women with children in Place de Milan and the announced closure of the Stations, which provide 102 emergency shelter places for unaccompanied minors in appeal.
