Automated license plate recognition (LAPI) system for parking control in Grenoble.

Starting October 5th, Grenoble is utilizing LAPI (Automated License Plate Recognition) to revolutionize parking enforcement.

The LAPI system, equipped with four pairs of cameras mounted on a vehicle, automatically scans license plates. This technology is designed to simplify the tasks of ASVP (Aide et Surveillance de la Voie Publique) officers by reducing reading errors and optimizing the control of paid parking spaces.
Collected data, including exact location and vehicle information, is sent to a back office where agents verify it before issuing fines. This system ensures continuous turnover of parking spots, making it easier for visitors to find available spaces.
The primary goal for the City is to facilitate better parking spot rotation and free up officers' time. They can then focus on more specific enforcement, such as parking in delivery zones, disabled parking bays, or on sidewalks and bike lanes.
Tests have already been conducted within the city. The system will officially become operational on October 5th. For holders of the CMI-Stationnement (disabled parking permit), parking remains free upon prior vehicle registration. Residents require no additional steps, while visitors must still enter their license plate number via the EasyPark app or the parking meter.
