65 years ago, on October 17, 1961, thousands of Algerians peacefully demonstrated in Paris against a discriminatory curfew. The repression, carried out under the authority of police prefect Maurice Papon, resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, some thrown into the Seine, and thousands of arrests. These crimes were long minimized and concealed.
During the ceremony in Échirolles, Mayor Amandine Demore praised the fight of survivors, families, associations, activists, and historians who worked to bring the truth to light and break the silence surrounding these events.
“"We cannot build a peaceful society on denial and forgetting."
She called for confronting history, recognizing the committed crimes, and passing on this memory to future generations. The city of Échirolles, described as a "city of peace and solidarity," is committed to keeping this memory and the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity alive.
