Nearly 2,000 CM1-CM2 students are participating this school year in the educational program of the Pôle métropolitain du Genevois français, focusing on light pollution and the preservation of the night.

For the 2026-2027 school year, 78 classes of CM1-CM2 from the Pôle métropolitain du Genevois français are involved in an educational program dedicated to light pollution. This awareness initiative aims to inform young people about the impacts of artificial lighting and the importance of preserving darkness.
Throughout the school year, students will explore the consequences of light pollution on biodiversity, human health, and stargazing. Local environmental education actors will engage with the classes to address these topics in a fun and age-appropriate manner, including workshops, games, and field investigations.
These activities will enable schoolchildren to better understand the effects of artificial lighting and identify actions that contribute to preserving the night. The program, fully funded by the Pôle métropolitain, is offered free of charge to participating municipalities and schools.
This second edition marks an increase compared to the previous year: in 2025-2026, 1,563 students from 62 classes had been made aware. For this new school year, participation has risen to nearly 2,000 students across 78 classes. The first sessions began in October in the municipalities of Pays de Gex Agglomération and Terre Valserhône l’Interco.
By engaging younger generations, the Pôle métropolitain reaffirms its commitment to protecting biodiversity and promoting lighting that is more respectful of the environment and natural rhythms.
