Regional indicators show that Cantal faces significant mental health challenges, more so than elsewhere in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Geographical isolation, difficulties in accessing care, and social perceptions of mental health can hinder treatment seeking. Furthermore, the department has one of the highest aging indices in France, with a substantial proportion of elderly individuals.
Figures indicate that mortality rates linked to mental disorders, behavioral disorders, dementia, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, or suicide are higher in Cantal than the regional average. The same applies to the rate of individuals undergoing treatment for psychiatric conditions. Understaffed with healthcare professionals, the department is implementing an attractiveness policy for psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychomotor therapists.
In response to these issues, Cantal benefits from several structuring thematic networks that play a key role in prevention, information, coordination, and local action animation. These networks, such as the parenting network of CIDFF15, the Cantal suicide prevention network, Communauté 360, the Coordination Support Device (DAC), ADMR, and the respite platform of UDAF, connect institutional, associative, and professional stakeholders.
The Regional Health Agency (ARS) Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes supports the implementation of the Local Health Contract for Eastern Cantal, co-financing its coordination with 35,000 euros annually, including 10,500 euros dedicated to mental health. This support aims to strengthen coordination and develop responses tailored to the territory's needs.
The density of psychiatrists in Cantal is lower than at regional and national levels (3.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 9.1 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and 9.2 in France). To act proactively, the ARS supports prevention and outreach initiatives, funding over 8.5 full-time equivalent psychologists working with various groups: young people, isolated or precarious individuals, victims of violence or psychotrauma, and those facing addiction issues.
The Cantal adolescent center reopened its doors at the end of 2025 with ARS support. The agency also backs the Therapeutic Support Service for Minors Victimized by Sexual and/or Incestuous Violence (SATh), both managed by the association Accent jeunes and covering the entire department.
