This initiative marks a crucial step in safeguarding the Saint-André church, an emblematic monument of the commune, completed in 1488 and classified as a Historic Monument since 1909. Overlooking the historic heart for over five centuries, the building requires significant work on its roof structure and covering.
The goal of this campaign is to raise €100,000 for the first phase of work, focusing on reinforcing the timber frame and restoring the roof. This effort is supported by the Fondation du patrimoine, which pledges to match every euro donated, up to €20,000.
The Mayor and the Municipal Council have praised this exceptional commitment, viewing it as a valuable catalyst for accelerating the preservation of this remarkable heritage. The Saint-André church, one of the oldest religious buildings in the Ain department, is a testament to the Flamboyant Gothic architecture of the late Middle Ages.
Its history includes a major fire in the 17th century and the destruction of its bell tower during the French Revolution, leaving it with a unique profile. Still an active place of worship, it also witnessed the passage of Saint Vincent de Paul in 1617, where the first Confrérie de la Charité (Brotherhood of Charity) was founded.
Preserving the Saint-André church means transmitting an essential part of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne's identity to future generations, maintaining a place of memory, spirituality, and heritage that is the pride of its residents.
Individuals, businesses, associations, and patrons are invited to contribute to this restoration. Every donation, widely shared, directly aids in safeguarding this emblematic monument. More information and participation details are available on the official Fondation du patrimoine page.
